One
of the major initiatives of the 100 Black Men is to promote
health and wellness in the African-American community while
reaching the younger populations to help them start thinking
at earlier ages about good health. One of the Health
& Wellness programs biggest and successful campaigns
is the annual Sickle Cell Walk-a-Thon done in conjunction
with the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, which
this year brought over $30,000 to go towards research, aid
and education about sickle cell.
HIV/AIDS
Initiative In Miami, Florida, fifty-seven (57%) percent
of HIV cases are African Americans and of that number
fifty-five (55%) percent are African American men and
forty-three (43%) percent are Women of Color. HIV/AIDS
is the leading cause of death for women ages 25 to
44. HIV can be transmitted by unprotected vaginal,
oral and anal sex.
To
address the issues of HIV/AIDS, the 100 along
with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s
Delta Cares will provide Quarterly Health and
Wellness Symposiums. These symposiums will
provide an environment to provide insight and
discussion as to the realities of living in
this society with HIV/AIDS.
