Black Men of South Florida Enroll its 2007-2008
Class of Young Leaders
Miami—The 100 Black Men of South
Florida launched its annual session of its
signature program: the Leadership Academy recently. The
Leadership Academy was created to link young black
males to male mentors for guidance, cultural exposure
and a lifetime of fun.
“It has been a tremendous experience to serve
as a mentor since the programs inception,” said Marc Henderson,
a member of the 100 Black Men. “The
societal challenges impacting the lives of young
black males when we started this program continue
to threaten their future at an even greater rate. Our
program gives them choices and aims to connect them
to success.”
The 100 Black Men of South Florida has been successful
in its formula to mentor young males from middle
school to high school graduation. The program
focuses on financial literacy, cultural awareness,
educational excellence and health and wellness and
real life issues.
“Young black males learn by example, “said Shawn Topps,
a longtime Leadership Academy mentor. “They
are bombarded with negative images and peer pressure. As
a mentor, I strive to earn their trust, set a standard
for them to live by and hope that they listen and
respond to my advice. Our kids in college
have proven that it is doable with the right guidance.”
It is clear that the young leaders appreciate their
efforts.
“The mentors are great. They take
us places to do things we have never done before. I
have been to Las Vegas, Atlanta and other fun places. They
new people will enjoy it just as much as I do, “said Dennis James,
15, of Norland Senior High School.
The 100 Black Men of South Florida is a non-profit
organization created to positively impact the lives
of the young black male youth of this community through
mentoring, intellectual development, and the fostering
of economic, health and life enriching opportunities.
