UBS
Financial Services – Dollars and $ense
Program – For the 2nd time in
three years, we were afforded the opportunity
for our Young Leaders of Leadership Academy
to participate in fiscal education and open
competition. African Americans have less savings;
are less likely to own equities or to be investors
in the stock market (EVEN IN A GOOD MARKET);
are less likely to be homeowners than most
other members of other ethnic groups; do not
retire, just stop working because they cannot
work any longer; spend most of their income
on disposable, non-appreciating products or
assets; live check to check. The foregoing
statements are broad generalizations; however,
the 100 did not have to look further than these
generalizations to find a need for the financial
component of Leadership Academy. An important
element of any investment program or strategy
is time. Most African Americans (and most people)
start too late, and many African Americans
never start.
The Past Must Not Become The
Future
With this 12-week program, the
100 seeks to educate fifteen Young Leaders
that have demonstrated an interest in
finance and investment. The program’s
purpose is to:
Promote
financial awareness among the participants
Define
the characteristics and benefits of a
financially sound budget
Teach
techniques/principles to be used in picking
a company to invest in
Highlight
the benefits of compounding interest.
