Zo's Summer Groove
I
n
the seven years since Zo's Summer Groove's successful
inception, the 100 Black Men of South Florida Inc. has forged
a flourishing and mutually beneficial relationship with NBA
super star Alonzo Mourning formerly of the Miami Heat. Since
1997, proceeds from the weekend long event have benefited
the 100 Black Men of South Florida Inc.'s biggest mentoring
initiative program, The Leadership Academy.
Although the monetary contributions have been beneficial,
Alonzo's personal interaction with the young people has
been extraordinarily valuable. The 100 has leveraged our
participation in Zo's Summer Groove to further benefit
other community based organizations by making sure the
underserved populations have opportunities to attend events.
According
to Dr. Harold Guinyard, Chairman of the Leadership
Academy,
"Zo's Summer Groove has provided an opportunity
for the young men of the
Leadership Academy to relate positively to new people,
participate in discussions and activities with peers,
act supportively toward others, volunteer to help and
seek help from others, strengthen peer relations, sustain
friendships with peers and finally respond positively
to teachers and other authority figures. It is great
opportunity that Zo's Summer Groove provides the organizations
it helps.
